Investigating the Mediating Role of Innovation between Entrepreneurship and Regional Economic DevelopmentSince the 1980s, it has been widely recognized that innovation and entrepreneurship play a key role in regional economic development. In recent years, many theoretical and empirical studies have often emphasized the importance of innovative role of entrepreneurship for a high level of regional economic development. Inspired from these arguments, this study tries to understand the relationship between the level of regional economic development and the rate of entrepreneurship and innovation. In this study, innovation has played a mediatory role between entrepreneurship and the level of economic development. The main purpose is to demonstrate how the relationship between regional economic development level and entrepreneurship rate changes depending on the level of innovation. The study used mediation analysis and data of 26 NUTS II regions of Turkey for four different years: 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010. The results, supporting the mainstream arguments in the literature and the main hypothesis, illustrate that the impact of entrepreneurship on the level of economic development is more pronounced especially in regions with higher rates of innovations.

The Reasons for Syrian Refugees in Turkey Becoming Entrepreneurs Based on Push and Pull FactorsAlthough Syrian refugee entrepreneurship is obvious in terms of socio-economic, the drivers of it have not been studied much in the literature. The aim of this study is to examine the reasons of refugees becoming entrepreneurs; more than three million immigrated to Turkey because of domestic turbulence in Syria, in the framework of the push-pull model. For this purpose, in 2016, face-to-face interviews were conducted with a total of 30 Syrian ‘urban entrepreneurs’ in Hatay, Gaziantep, Mersin, and Istanbul. The refugee entrepreneurs, registered to Chambers, have been reached with the snowball method; the responses, answered semi-structured questions with an interpreter, were coded and categorized. Socio-economic problems such as language problems, discrimination, legal problems, unemployment, obstacles to access to resources, and low wages, experienced by Syrian refugees, push for entrepreneurship. Specifically, experienced entrepreneurs before, the willingness to transform these problems into opportunity is the most important factor that pull to be as entrepreneurs.
